Tom Wood Porsche
held a VIP reception on Wednesday to celebrate the arrival of the new Porsche 911. There were hors d'oeuvres including meatballs
and caprese salad, beer and wine, and door prizes of wall hangings, pen sets,
and travel mugs.
The highlight of the night was the presentation of the new 911. Sales Consultant Rob Graves spoke about the vehicle before it was presented: "We are here today to not only unveil the next 911, but also to announce that the golden age of the sports car is here. Again.
The age of adrenalin-filled performance. The age of an uncompromising connection between car and driver. The age of an iconic shape, made more iconic. The next 911 is squarely rooted in the principles that have defined our racing heritage over the last 50 years. It's also everything we envision for the future of the sports car. In short, it is everything we've come to love about the Porsche 911 and everything we've dreamed it could be.
Over the course of six 911 generations, we've held steadfast to our ideals. Embodying pure, unadulterated sports car performance, everyday usability, efficiency and undeniable style. And the next 911 remains true to all of those principles. There are even a few Porsche firsts in the new 911. But before we look at those, let's look at a few firsts in previous models:
- The very first generation of 911, the 901, boasted a five-speed manual and sophisticated independent suspension, while its contemporaries made do with a four-speed and leaf-spring suspension. It had a top speed of 134mph, impressive even today.
- The early seventies saw the first use of the Carrera name and the landmark introduction of the first 911 Turbo, still an icon for ultimate performance.
- In 1989, the 964 (Carrera 4) was launched as the first all-wheel drive. It also boasted another first: The first generation to offer the Tiptronic automatic transmission.
- 1995 saw the Turbo version of the 993, which included the first standard production Porsche with twin turbo chargers and all-wheel drive. It was also the first generation to have a six-speed manual transmission.
- The next generation of Porsche, the 996, introduced a water-cooled engine. All previous engines were air-cooled.
The 997 brought a host of firsts:
- A new engine with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) for better performance and lower fuel consumption.
- The 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) that replaced the Tiptronic.
- With the 997, PDK also established a new benchmark for smoother, faster gear shifts.
Then there's the 991. The car that's about to make the 911 a legend-for the seventh time, with quite a few firsts of its own:
- The 2012 911 was built from the ground up with 90% new or fundamentally revised materials.
- The body is 100 pounds lighter, thanks to extensive use of aluminum.
- It has lighter, more fuel-efficient engines that generate more power.
- There's also a longer wheelbase and wider track for more stability and room.
- It also features technologies like auto stop-start and coasting for even greater efficiencies.
- These firsts all came together to form the next 911.
The 911's looks are viscerally exciting. The roofline has been lowered for improved wind resistance. The front track has been widened for enhanced stability in corners. It also has a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs, adding more comfort, more agility, and more style.
The idea of Porsche Intelligent Performance is based on the vision of deriving more power from less fuel-and that is certainly the case here. The next 911 gets 400 horsepower from its smaller, yet immensely powerful 3.8 liter engine, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60 in a thrill-inducing 4.3 seconds. There's also available Dynamic Engine Mounts that improve traction and stability. Porsche Torque Vectoring increases traction, stability and agility. Auto Stop/Start, coasting and thermal management system features have also been added to further reduce fuel consumption.

The changes get even more impressive on the inside, starting with a roomier interior.
Rich, leather sport seats combine unparalleled comfort with racing-style support. Standard on the next 911 is a high-resolution 4.6-inch full-color display, for viewing onboard computer, audio system, or navigation information. For those chasing the perfect sound, the available Burmester High?End Surround Sound System will satisfy any audiophile.
It all adds up to the 911 you see before you. But we invite you to see for yourself how this isn't just the new 911, it's the future of the sports car."
